As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming Construct My Future Camp, let's dive deeper into the exciting activities and future aspirations discussed during a conversation between Tatyana Dawson, the Social Media Coordinator at Vesta Foundation Solutions, and Marla Esser Cloos, the Camp Director of Construct My Future.

Running from June 5th to the 9th, the camp provides a captivating experience for students. Each day, campers will engage in four activities that provide a comprehensive overview of various aspects of construction. Students are rotated into several activities to gain knowledge and experience in different areas.

The camp starts by focusing on fundamental skills like driving nails and working with fasteners. Before constructing their toolboxes, participants will gain hands-on experience hammering nails and screwing screws, among other essential techniques. Throughout the camp, campers will explore the following:

  • Carpentry
  • Plumbing
  • HVAC systems
  • Large equipment operation
  • Welding
  • Concrete and masonry
  • Finishes (including painting and drywall)
  • Insulated concrete forms
  • Electrical work
  • And more.

The program has been thoughtfully designed to provide a holistic understanding of the construction industry's different facets. This opens participants' eyes to a world of possibilities.

In addition to the core activities, smaller, interactive exercises are incorporated into lunchtime. These mini-activities, such as operating remote-control trucks or engaging in flooring exercises, keep campers actively involved and stimulated. The camp organizers understand the importance of providing an engaging experience, especially for middle school-aged students, and strive to create a dynamic learning environment.

While the camp has attracted a significant number of boys, it is exciting to note that several girls are registered. In recognition of diversity, the camp offers a dedicated girls' crew, allowing young female participants to choose between an all-girls crew or a mixed crew. The camp's crew captains, who serve as mentors and counselors, include young women with backgrounds in carpentry or the building industry. Their firsthand experiences will be valuable resources for aspiring female builders.

Construct My Future envisions expansion beyond its current location. The long-term goal is to create a "camp in a box" concept that can be implemented in other locales. This would involve taking the camp to different communities or assisting others in organizing their camps. The organizers aim to facilitate replication and encourage national sponsorship by standardizing activities and providing guidance. The ultimate aim is to make the camp accessible to students nationwide, including in rural areas where such opportunities are often scarce.

The decision to offer a day camp format rather than a residential program was deliberate. Managing residential camp logistics can be challenging, especially when ensuring middle school-aged participants' continuous engagement. However, the day camp format provides Construct My Future with an enriching experience while respecting campers' constraints and preferences.

As Construct My Future Camp evolves, it seeks to empower the next generation of builders, architects, and tradespeople. The camp plays a pivotal role in shaping the construction industry's future by igniting curiosity, fostering hands-on learning, and expanding horizons. The dedication and vision of its organizers ensure that this transformative camp is here to stay. It has plans for future growth and nationwide accessibility on the horizon.

Join us in celebrating the upcoming Construct My Future Camp, and let's inspire the builders of tomorrow to shape a world of endless possibilities.
